The fear of flying

People have all sorts of fears. Some are afraid of being alone, afraid of water, heights, small spaces, sharp objects, being touched, and many many more.

Being afraid of flying is also one of the common ones. Some are so afraid of it that they would not even go near an aircraft. But some less-serious ones are only afraid in times of TURBULENCE [when the aircraft goes in bumpy conditions in weather conditions].

I was flying to BKI yesterday afternoon, and there were three girls seated at the first row of the starboard [right] side. And during take-off, my crew and I noticed that one of them were already gripping her friend's hand tightly.

Due to heavy rain over Kota Kinabalu International Airport, we were unable to even make an approach, not to mention to land the plane itself. After holding in the air for about an hour, the captain finally announced that we were going to land, and it was going to be a bumpy ride in the process. When the cabin was checked and all was ready, my crew and I took our seats. Then the bumps got slightly worse, but pretty much like a mild roller coaster ride.

The funny thing was, everytime the three ladies in the front were screaming, two little kids seated at row 2 would echo with their childish laughter. The rest of us were trying very very hard to not laugh at the kids' innocence, and I meant we were trying VERY hard!

The captain did a BEAUTIFUL landing despite the conditions, and he got a well-deserved clap from the passengers after that successful landing!

But being the paranoid that I am, I scared my crews a little when I told them THREE times to be more vigilant when landing in raining conditions.

Oh well, nothing beats having a heck of an experienced and good captain on board!!

What kind of sleeper are you?

Now that I sit facing the passengers during take-offs and landings, I took notice of this one thing: sleeping style. So which do you fall under?

1) The Chinese Poet
(the kind where the head turns a complete circle, or sometimes swings a little like a pendulum, just like how a chinese poet shakes his head when he recites a good chinese poem!)

2) The Elevator Needle
(you know, those old-fashion elevators where the location of the elevator cabin is indicated by a needle? These sleepers' head will slide slowly, either left or right...and then goes right back to starting position [straight up]. And the process goes on and on and on...until we wake them up!)

3) The Venus Fly Trap
(hehe....in typical fashion, this type of sleeper sleeps with their mouth hanging open - once or twice, you may even see the drool...yeap, just like a Venus Fly Trap!)

4) The Fisherman
(oh, this is rather common, where the head bops up and down. Just like the fishing rod when you go fishing. Especially when using the Apollo. You gotta jerk it up and down to get fish!)

5) The Yoga-Neck
(ouch..this is rather painful to watch. The head starts of like the elevator needle, only difference is that it'll stop when the head reaches the shoulder. And it stays there! So you can really see the stretched muscle [read : feel the coming pain] on the neck. Ouch!)

6) The Troubled Sleeper
(this type of sleeper gives me the impression that they have the world on their shoulders. They frown when they sleep! Their forehead is wrinkled, and their eybrows almost meet in the middle... a little disturbing to watch, actually)

So which one are you?
